1 Corinthians 15:33 reads "Do not be mislead: 'bad company corrupts good character.'"
Relationships, good or bad, can easily become cursors in our lives. As hard as it is to believe, even positive relationships can create a block between you and the Lord because they take priority over Him. Sometimes we get so wrapped up in a friendship or relationship that we let our minds obsess over it. Relationships easily take over our thoughts and control our moods. We meet someone new and then all of the sudden find the need to have to constantly please them or else we feel like a failure. Relationships become demanding, and when it gets to that point, we choose to tend to the relationship before we tend to our relationship with God. Especially with ungodly, negative relationships: someone who is unhealthy and damaging to our walk of faith. This type of relationship wouldn’t be encouraging your relationship with God, but would be discouraging. This relationship gets in the way of our purpose that God has planned for us. They are dangerous and unsafe because they are only hindering us, when our relationship with God is growing us. Relationships with unhealthy people are degrading. They speak with harsh words, use pressure, doubt your abilities and are unsupportive. And, most of the time when they do something wrong, they make you feel like the bad guy anyway. You feel as though you are in constant need of mending this type of relationship. But, let me just tell you from experience, only God can do the mending. We waste so much time giving to those who aren’t willing to take it. It becomes draining. We are so wrapped up in it all, that we almost don’t realize what they are doing. It’s blinding. These relationships are not worth it and they keep us from the relationships that God has planned for us! God will put good and bad people in your life, some for life lessons and some for support. He chooses who crosses our paths, but it is up to us on who gets to stay there. We have to be able to recognize a good and godly relationship over one that is ungodly! Is there someone in your life that is taking priority over God? Is there someone who is unsafe and causing distance between you and your faith? If there is someone in your life that you see as being unhealthy, pray about it. Ask God to reveal unhealthy relationships to you. Take some time to journal about your thoughts on today’s section.
