CURSOR #7: PRIDE

Happy Monday!

“When pride comes, then comes disgrace, but with humility comes wisdom.”-Proverbs 11:2

Pride is defined as a deep feeling of pleasure or satisfaction from your own achievements. Why is this a bad thing you might ask? Can’t I be proud of my own achievements? Of course you can, but how you portray it, is what can become dangerous. Being prideful can easily come off as showing off your own life and its accomplishments. A mindset of pride can quickly take over. There is a difference between being proud and being prideful. When someone is proud of their own achievements, they will probably express it through a joyful attitude and a pat on the back. But, when someone is prideful, they do so by telling everyone about what they have done. They almost expect people to reciprocate the same attitude that they have. They expect those pats on the back, but from everyone around them. Prideful people want everyone to know every little detail of every little thing they have done. Or, they might even be prideful about the things someone else has done, like the achievements of their child, spouse or significant other. Pride can take over and take place of God. Instead of being humble and doing things without the need to be congratulated or praised, we walk around with a prideful attitude and expect our every move to be noticed. In order to let the writer back into our lives, we have to rid ourselves of the prideful mindset. We have to be humble and remember that our actions are to please God, not receive attention from the world. We don’t need to post on social media every time we save a cat from a tall tree (bad example, but you get the point). We need to act and live for the Lord, and let things go unnoticed by others because we know that He notices! We shouldn’t have an agenda for being good to others. We shouldn’t have to only help someone if it means getting attention after. We need to do good in this world regardless! We need to take action behind the scenes. The credit doesn’t go to us; it always goes to God! Take out today’s journaling section and reflect on these questions: Where have you noticed pride leaking into your life? Do you tend to crave attention and praise after doing something you deem “praise-worthy”? Is there something you brag about that maybe you shouldn’t? Ask God to rid yourself of a prideful attitude and ask to have a humble heart!
