Sometimes when I don’t know what verses to read, I put a few on pieces of paper & draw a few to read. Today, I picked 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18: “Always be joyful. Never stop praying. Be thankful in all circumstances, for this is God’s will for you who belong to Christ Jesus.” This verse is reminding us of three practices that we often don’t recognize as being commands. JOY: remembering that in the midst of turmoil, God is in control... there is something to be joyful about. PRAYER: God is always there with you. Talk to Him! THANKFULNESS: Give thanks for what God has given you & be thankful for His presence. Each of these go against our natural inclinations, but we have to make the conscious decision to OBEY and put them into practice regardless of what our circumstances are. When we obey we begin to see things and people from a NEW perspective. Doing God’s will helps us to find more reasons to be joyful, lift up prayer and be THANKFUL. Something, too, to think about is having a PRAYERFUL attitude filled with JOY & THANKFULNESS- combining the practices together. This attitude is built when we acknowledge our dependence on Him, recognizing His presence, & determining to OBEY Him. Then, we find it natural to pray in frequent joyful way, rather than just in a situational way... like when times get bad. Practicing joyfulness, prayer, and thankfulness should be priority. These practices should not fluctuate in our lives but be something we bring into every situation in our life. What are you joyful for today? What can you PRAY and thank God for today?
