I want to focus on Psalm 23 this morning.
“The Lord is my shepherd. I have all that I need.”
David writes this Psalm from his personal experience tending to sheep. Sheep are fully dependent on their shepherd for guidance and protection. And like the sheep were dependent on David’s wisdom and way, we must be dependent on Jesus in the same way.
We must be obedient followers who are wise enough to follow the only one who will lead us to the right places in the right way.
What this Psalm focuses on is not the physical characteristics of sheep, but the discipleship qualities that they portray.
When we choose to be wise, and follow our Good Shepherd, we will live a life of fullness and contentment. But what happens when we stray away?
We make our own path. And this is where the problem begins, our problem of blaming God.
Friends, we cannot blame God for the environment we create for ourselves when we made the choice to stray away.
Our shepherd knows the “green meadows” and the “peaceful streams” that will bring restoration to our lives. & we can only find these places when we obediently follow, not curiously stray.
We live in an environment where straying away from truth and guidance is the desirable thing to do. I can’t tell you how many times my heart has followed the guidance of what’s around me rather than the wisdom my heart’s supposed to see.
God is wisdom. His word is the ultimate guide. His voice is our direction.
Today, I pray that we listen to our ultimate guide. I pray we shut out the things of this world so that we may fully hear and see the path God has towards renewal. I pray we choose to follow our shepherd and live out those discipleship qualities. I pray we know wisdom from lies, and His peace from temporary comfort. I pray that we be sheep dependent on our Great Shepherd.
